Zirmil® YP – Pharmaceutical YTZ Grinding Media

Zirmil® YP is manufactured by Saint-Gobain ZirPro, a global producer of advanced ceramic grinding media. EMI Mills is an authorized distributor of Saint-Gobain ceramic media and provides product supply, bead-size guidance and milling application support.

Zirmil® YP is a high-density, high-purity yttria-stabilized zirconia grinding media designed for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other contamination-sensitive wet milling applications. It combines a ceramic density of approximately 6.0 g/cm³ with high hardness, wear resistance and a narrow bead-size distribution.

Both products are high-density yttria-stabilized zirconia grinding media. Zirmil® YP is specifically designed for pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications, with an emphasis on chemical purity, low media wear, contamination control and documented quality procedures. Standard Zirmil® Y is used across a broader range of high-energy industrial milling applications.

Zirmil® YP is used for nanomilling active pharmaceutical ingredients, pharmaceutical suspensions, drug formulation development, cell disruption and other biotechnology or contamination-sensitive processes. It can also be considered for food-processing applications where its documented material purity and food-contact testing are relevant.

Zirmil® YP combines high hardness, wear resistance, chemical purity and controlled grain structure to help reduce ceramic wear during milling. Actual media wear and contamination levels depend on the formulation, mill configuration, processing conditions and operating time.

Zirmil® YP is a high-purity zirconia bead designed to meet the technical requirements of pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications. Its supporting documentation includes chemical specifications, trace-impurity analysis, manufacturing controls, finished-product testing and batch-level quality documentation. Suitability should still be evaluated against the requirements of each specific process.

EMI Mills offers nominal Zirmil® YP bead sizes of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm. Specific size distributions may be available upon request.

Bead-size selection depends on the starting particle size, target particle size, formulation viscosity, mill configuration and media-separation system. Smaller beads are generally selected for finer particle-size reduction, but the optimal size must also be compatible with the mill. EMI can recommend a starting size based on your process requirements.

Zirmil® YP can be used across EMI laboratory, pilot and production wet media mills. Compatibility with a particular bead size depends on the mill configuration and media-separation system. Contact EMI before ordering to confirm the appropriate bead size for your equipment.

Saint-Gobain ZirPro’s technical report concludes that Zirmil® YP can be used in the manufacture of food products.
